When Dawn contacted me about Rylie’s First Birthday event photography, I was excited! I had never attended a Korean dol (doljanchi) and was ready to learn more about it. She explained that there were important parts including the doljabi, family photos at the traditional dol table, and the baby in traditional Korean clothes.
The doljabi is a special ceremony/activity where a number of items are placed in front of the birthday girl. She is then encouraged to choose an item from the table that will foretell her future. Before she chooses, the adults and kids at the party vote on what they think she will choose and put their vote in a little bowl. If they guess right, they get to be in a drawing for a prize!
In Rylie’s case, she chose MONEY! This means that she will be wealthy in her future (big brother had picked the same at his dol!). It looks like mom and dad are in store for some wealthy kiddos!
